In Service To Families, Children & The Courts4th Annual Children in Trauma Conference—featuring Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, of Boston University School Medical SchoolJanuary 13-14, 2006 Children in Trauma explores the multifaceted issues surrounding children who experience trauma in their lives. The 2006 conference is our fourth annual presentation, and we are pleased to feature Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, whose work leads the way in forging new frontiers of treatment and understanding of the impact of trauma. Conference Description:Children in Trauma: Frontiers in Trauma Treatment will examine the effects of childhood trauma on development of the "self" and in relationships with others. During this past decade an enormous amount has been learned about the differences between memories of everyday experiences and those of overwhelming events. These memories are different, depending on the age at which the trauma occurs and the social support of the victims. Using both research studies and clinical examples, Dr. van der Kolk will present basic data on the nature of traumatic memories and examine the implications of this knowledge to clinical practice. He will also explore the effects of trauma on cognitive, psychological, and interpersonal functioning and review the research on the profound effects of trauma on cognition, affect regulation, and on the development of “self” and interactions with others. Dr. van der Kolk will explore how trauma and disruptions in attachment bonds affect the development of identity and how this is expressed socially as difficulties in affect modulation and destructive behavior against self and others. In the wake of the new insights into the neurobiology of trauma, Dr. van der Kolk will present a range of new approaches to treatment that have been developed based on research on the effect of trauma on affect regulation, perception, and other brain functions. This new frontier of treatment represents fundamental shifts from earlier therapeutic paradigms. Join us for Children in Trauma: New Frontiers in Trauma Treatment and you will……• Explore the various domains in which overwhelming experiences are
