4th Annual Children in Trauma Conference

—featuring Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, of Boston University School Medical School

January 13-14, 2006
CSU, Chico campus
8am-4:30pm each day, Bell Memorial Union Auditorium

Children in Trauma explores the multifaceted issues surrounding children who experience trauma in their lives. The 2006 conference is our fourth annual presentation, and we are pleased to feature Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, whose work leads the way in forging new frontiers of treatment and understanding of the impact of trauma.

Conference Description:

Children in Trauma: Frontiers in Trauma Treatment will examine the effects of childhood trauma on development of the "self" and in relationships with others. During this past decade an enormous amount has been learned about the differences between memories of everyday experiences and those of overwhelming events. These memories are different, depending on the age at which the trauma occurs and the social support of the victims. Using both research studies and clinical examples, Dr. van der Kolk will present basic data on the nature of traumatic memories and examine the implications of this knowledge to clinical practice. He will also explore the effects of trauma on cognitive, psychological, and interpersonal functioning and review the research on the profound effects of trauma on cognition, affect regulation, and on the development of “self” and interactions with others.

Dr. van der Kolk will explore how trauma and disruptions in attachment bonds affect the development of identity and how this is expressed socially as difficulties in affect modulation and destructive behavior against self and others. In the wake of the new insights into the neurobiology of trauma, Dr. van der Kolk will present a range of new approaches to treatment that have been developed based on research on the effect of trauma on affect regulation, perception, and other brain functions. This new frontier of treatment represents fundamental shifts from earlier therapeutic paradigms.

Join us for Children in Trauma: New Frontiers in Trauma Treatment and you will……

• Explore the various domains in which overwhelming experiences are stored in memory and the various ways in which those memories are retrieved into consciousness
• Learn about the recent advances in the neurobiology of trauma
• Examine how traumatized children process information.
• Understand the range of adaptations to trauma early in the life cycle
• Know how to assess patients with Chronic PTSD and how to develop appropriate phase-oriented treatment plans.

Bessel A. van der Kolk M.D. has been active as a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress and related phenomena since the 1970s. He founded the first clinic in Boston, the Trauma Center, which specializes in the treatment of traumatized children and adults, in 1982.

Dr. van der Kolk was investigator on the first neuroimaging study of PTSD, He recently completed the first NIMH funded study of a new exposure treatment, EMDR for the treatment of PTSD. He was co-principal investigator of the DSM IV Field Trial for PTSD, in which he and his colleagues specifically delineated the impact of trauma across the life span, and the differential impact of interpersonal trauma.

His current research is on how trauma affects memory processes; brain-imaging studies of PTSD, treatment outcome of exposure treatment vs. pharmacological interventions, and the effects of theater groups on preventing violence among chronically traumatized youth. .

Dr. van der Kolk is past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and Clinical Director of the Trauma Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is co-director of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Community Program in Boston and originator of, and currently on the steering committee of, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network
